AI is already the day-to-day reality for in-house legal teams, but the use and application of AI is shifting. Legal teams aren't just asking whether they should use AI; they're asking which AI approaches genuinely fit their workflows, governance requirements and operational goals.

At the heart of that question is a simple challenge. As a legal professional you want the speed that AI promises, but you can’t afford to compromise on the accuracy, credibility and trustworthiness of the information general purpose AI regularly outputs. A confident answer from a general-purpose chatbot is worth very little if you can’t trace where it came from or how to apply the information.

Unverified sources and hallucinations can happen. For example, in November 2025, it was reported that a family lawyer from Maryland, US was sanctioned after filing a brief that included fake citations generated by a general-purpose chatbot. The judge called it “unquestionably improper” and ordered remedial ethics training.

That's exactly the problem we at Summize have set out to solve. Today, we're delighted to announce our partnership with FromCounsel - one of the UK's leading providers of legal knowledge and expertise - embedded in Summize, directly in your flow of work.

Bringing trusted legal expertise into the flow of work

Summize and FromCounsel have partnered to bring trusted legal expertise directly into the existing contracting workflows you use every day, whether you’re redlining in Microsoft Word or querying a post-signature contract in your Summize repository.

FromCounsel’s knowledge base is now integrated into your Summize contract intelligence platform. For Summize customers, this gives you access to a suite of purpose-built AI agents that work from FromCounsel's continuously updated legal knowledge base.

Authored and maintained by leading barristers and trusted by the UK's top law firms, FromCounsel's expertise has long set the standard for reliable legal knowledge. Now, through Summize, that same depth of knowledge is available to in-house legal teams through three new agents that will focus on UK commercial, corporate and employment law.

Get to know FromCounsel

FromCounsel is one of the UK's leading legal knowledge platforms, providing continuously updated legal expertise authored and maintained by leading barristers and legal specialists. Founded by Andrew Thornton KC, a practicing King's Counsel, FromCounsel serves around 95% of the UK's top law firms and roughly 200 firms in total. Its content is curated, expert-authored and updated daily to reflect the latest legal developments, hence making it one of the most trusted legal knowledge sources in the market.

Historically, that depth of expertise has predominantly been used only by the law firms, but FromCounsel and Summize wish to bring high-quality legal knowledge direct to in-house legal professionals too - and it’s the first time FromCounsel has partnered with a contract lifecycle management solution.

The real difference: AI grounded in trusted, verified sources

This is where it matters most. Not all legal AI is built the same way, and the source behind the answer makes all the difference.

General-purpose AI tools typically draw on a broad range of public sources. It can be challenging to know if these sources are verified or if they have been updated or maintained or if the output simply contains complete hallucinations. For legal work, that uncertainty is a genuine risk.

Summize's FromCounsel AI agents take a fundamentally different approach.

The AI agents work from FromCounsel's expert-authored legal content – content that is written and continuously maintained by the UK’s leading barristers and legal specialists. Every answer is grounded in a known, verified and continuously updated source, giving Summize customers far greater confidence in the quality, reliability and provenance of the guidance they receive.

Going one step further: How to apply the knowledge

But trusted knowledge is only half of the story. The FromCounsel agents go a step further: they don't just tell you what the law is, they help you apply it to your own specific use cases.
Alongside the legal information, the agents provide practical recommendations, suggested next steps and guidance on the risks to consider – helping you understand how to apply the law to your own situation, not simply read it. Here’s just a few examples of how this looks in real life…

Agent What can you ask it?
Corporate Agent
  • What should a board consider when a company is approaching insolvency?
  • How does a share buyback work, and what are the statutory requirements?
  • What are the core duties directors owe under the Companies Act 2006, and how do they apply in practice?
  • Does a shareholder need to offer to sell its shares to other shareholders before selling to a non-shareholder?
  • For a special resolution to pass, do you need 75% of those eligible to vote or those who actually vote?
  • What are the rules around related party transactions and conflicts of interest for directors?
Employment Agent
  • What are the things that we have to include by law in an employment contract?
  • How does statutory sick pay work, and when does it kick in?
  • Can you change someone's pay or hours without their agreement?
  • What does a fair disciplinary process look like?
  • How should a grievance be handled, and what happens if it's ignored?
  • How does a flexible working request need to be handled?
  • What are the rules around maternity, paternity and shared parental leave?
  • What are the rules around settlement agreements with employees and who can sign them off?
  • What are the rules on non-compete clauses and are they enforceable?
Commercial & Data Protection Agent
  • What remedies are available a for breach of warranty?
  • Will a court imply terms in a contract that parties didn't include?
  • In what circumstances do we need to do a data protection impact assessment?
  • What is a legitimate interests assessment and when is it needed?
  • Can you specify exactly what I need to include in my DPA as a processor?
  • In what circumstances do we need to appoint a data protection officer?

A new model for legal support

For Summize customers, the partnership means on-demand access to expert legal knowledge and its practical application, across UK employment, commercial and corporate law, all without leaving the workflows you already use.

This partnership reflects the direction Summize is already moving in: from contract management towards true contract intelligence. As our Summize Intelligent Agents (SIA) bring more context, judgment and automation into everyday contracting, the addition of FromCounsel’s verified legal expertise is a natural next step – giving legal teams not just visibility into their contracts, but trusted guidance on how to act on them. It combines the right data with the right knowledge, at the point of need – doing what a contract intelligence system should do.

It is a clear answer to the question in-house teams are really asking: not whether to use AI, but how to use it in a way they can genuinely rely on.
