What is AI redlining?
AI redlining is on the rise as part of Contract Lifecycle Management solutions. But what exactly is AI redlining and are all AI redlining tools the same? Learn more about the definition, process and how Summize has created AI redlining with a difference.

Summize is underpinned by artificial intelligence (AI) to save time where it counts. We use our secure AI functionality across the entire contract lifecycle, helping in-house legal teams streamline their contract processes.
Our new functionality, AI redlining, does just that. It streamlines the contract review and redlining process, allowing legal teams to review and negotiate contracts with confidence and ease.
But what exactly is AI redlining?
What is AI redlining?
Legal professionals currently spend a lot of time reviewing the higher-volume, low-risk contracts, such as NDAs, service contracts and partnership agreements. These contracts generally contain the same clauses - payment terms, liability caps and auto-renewals. Even though repetitive, each term still needs to be reviewed.
These repetitive reviews are time-consuming and can prolong the contract lifecycle, slow down commercial negotiations, and ultimately not make efficient use of a legal professional's time.
AI redlining streamlines this process, reducing the hassle and time-consuming task for in-house legal teams.
AI redlining analyses contracts to detect non-compliant clauses, flagging and redlining any clauses which need a review and suggesting compliant alternatives according to a business's playbook.
What is Summize AI redlining?
Summize AI Redlining does just this but more.
Summize AI redlining is part of our leading Contract Lifecycle Management (CLM) software, that is already underpinned by AI technology. Our AI redlining functionality is part of our Microsoft Word integration, meaning that in-house legal teams can review and redline their contracts in the tool they are most familiar with.
The functionality is a guided, lawyer-driven process that walks users through contract language to make redline recommendations that can be easily reviewed and approved. There is no contract rewriting or reframing, unnecessary mistakes, or AI hallucinations that waste a legal team’s time.
But how exactly does Summize’s AI redlining and contract review work?
How does AI redlining work?
AI redlining can work in different ways across different CLM software. At Summize, we do AI redlining differently. Our AI redlining works and thinks like a lawyer, reviewing, analysing and suggesting clause changes just as a legal professional would do – but saving up to 85% of the manual review time.
Microsoft Word
Summize’s AI redlining works as part as our Microsoft Word Add-In, therefore allowing in-house legal teams and their counterparties to review, redline and negotiate in the tool they are already used to.
Playbooks
The process starts with your playbooks, designed to significantly reduce the time and effort required for manual redlining of your lower value legal work. Using your playbooks, the Summize Word AI Assistant will review and analyse the entire contract to assess whether the contract complies with your playbook’s rules. This is done in as little as sixty seconds.
AI rules, have they passed or failed?
Summize’s AI functionality then reviews your contract against your pre-defined rules and standard positions, to identify “Compliant”, “Needs Review” or even missing causes. The review is provided in a clear list, along with a simple explanation for each assessment.
AI redlining and suggestions
If a rule is identified as “Needs review” Summize’s AI will redline the specific section of the clause that has not complied. This is where Summize is AI redlining with a difference.
Unlike other AI contract review software, Summize’s AI will not overhaul entire sections of a clause but redline and suggest adjustments on specific words and phrases.
Alongside your redline the AI functionality will suggest amendments, based on the rules defined in your playbook. Before inserting it to the contract, you can review the suggested amendments and make any necessary adjustments to align with your business' terminology.
And that’s it! Supercharged, efficient AI redlining, saving you 85% of your manual review time.
How is Summize AI redlining different?
Summize’s AI redlining is surgical and precise. It does not redline or rewrite entire clauses of a contract, just non-compliant specific words and phrases.
This way of working not only streamlines your review process but also preserves the integrity of your content while promoting professionalism with your counterparty. Instead of redlining entire sections of their contract, only specific, precise terms are highlighted, making negotiations and reviews much more efficient.
Unlike other AI contract review software, Summize’s AI Redlining works in the contract review tools legal teams already use for manual redlining. By working directly within Microsoft Word, Summize’s AI is easier to adopt and more seamless to use in the contract negotiation process.
How else can you use AI in your contract reviews?
Summize’s AI does not just stop at contract redlining and contract review.
With the Microsoft Word Summize AI Assistant, you can simply ask questions in the side panel to instantly rephrase, translate, shorten, or query sections of your contract.
The AI will automatically identify relevant sentences, paragraphs and clauses, extracting key details like locations, numbers and terms for you. From there, it creates shareable natural language summaries that provide concise, clear overviews of the information you need.
Additionally, after the contract is signed, Summize’s AI extracts important dates, which can be synced directly to your calendar, ensuring you never miss a contract renewal or termination date again.
